Research Design and Communication Workshop Series

RDC Workshop Series

Embark on a journey of scientific discovery and effective communication

Designed for both aspiring researchers and seasoned scientists, this series delves into the intricacies of performing impactful research and conveying its significance to diverse audiences. Uncover the art of formulating research questions, designing rigorous methodologies, and interpreting results with precision. Simultaneously, master the art of clear and compelling science communication, honing skills in crafting engaging narratives, designing visual aids, and delivering presentations that resonate. Our workshop series provides a dynamic platform to cultivate expertise in research design and the art of sharing scientific insights.

The series is designed for students, staff, and postdocs within the CSB.

Each workshop consists of an interactive discussion with Center faculty on a given topic.

Workshop details will be shared via the CSB listserv.

Scientific Writing & Writing an Abstract

This workshop will focus on technical communication with a scientific audience, especially for abstract writing. This workshop will emphasize the importance of structure, reduced complexity, and knowing the audience in a written format.

Science Argumentation in Public Spaces

This workshop will focus on engaging with the public about science, how to build arguments about hot scientific topics and how to purposely engage with the public.

Presenting Your Science to Scientists

Whether you are presenting research at a symposium, conference, thesis defense, or professional meeting, the ability to communicate your ideas clearly and memorably is just as important as the research itself. This interactive workshop draws on the presentation principles of Jean-Luc Doumont, internationally recognized for his work on scientific and technical communication, to help participants design and deliver presentations that inform, engage, and inspire.

Participants will learn how to move beyond information-heavy slides and create presentations built around a clear message and a compelling narrative. The workshop focuses on audience-centered communication, helping presenters to develop their research narrative into a story for diverse audiences while reducing unnecessary jargon, and to use visuals to reinforce take-home messages. By the end of the workshop, participants will have a framework for planning and refining presentations that are concise, persuasive, and memorable, enabling them to share their research with both expert and non-expert audiences more effectively.

Science Entrepreneurship & Careers

If I don’t go to med school, what can I do with a science degree? This seminar will focus on potential science careers, from entrepreneurship to pharmaceutical companies with ongoing synthetic biology research programs. This will help students to understand the potential opportunities within synthetic biology, as well as biotechnology and the different STEM work environments that exist for college graduates.
