Center for Synthetic Biology Business Administrator
CSB is hiring a Business Administrator (BA) who will be responsible for administering the Center’s operational, financial, & business functions in support of our mission & in coordination with central offices such as HR, Budget, Facilities, IT, & Provost. The BA will be responsible for implementing existing policy & ensuring the effective, compliant, & efficient completion of daily administrative operations.
Northwestern University’s Center for Synthetic Biology (CSB) is a University Research Center within the Office for Research. Comprised of 24 affiliated faculty and more than 300 graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, undergraduate researchers and research and administrative staff the center focuses on tackling some of the most pressing global challenges related to sustainability, energy, bioproduction and health that will fuel the growing bioeconomy. Staff within the center support this mission and are an integral part of the center’s success.
This position would work closely with the center’s Director of Operations and Outreach, providing financial management for the center’s research portfolio. This includes providing budgets for anticipated funding, forecasting expenditures, expense reconciliation, data entry, ordering, in addition to other duties as assigned.

Center for Synthetic Biology Director of Research
CSB is hiring a Research Associate, Director of Research (DOR), who will lead the Center’s research operation. The DOR will work with CSB Co-Directors, the Director of Operations, and other CSB staff to help grow the research capacity of the Center, capitalizing on its current strengths and providing strategic direction for new research endeavors and partnerships, continually enhancing the Center’s programs and plans to ensure excellence at all levels. Proactively interfacing with the Center’s faculty, the DOR manages current and long-term research planning. Working with the CSB Education/Outreach coordinator and trainees, the DOR also helps support and long-term planning in support of the Center’s education, research, and outreach missions. The DOR is a key leadership position in the CSB that fosters the internal and collaborative spirit of the Center with alliances both internal and external to the University.
The Director of Research reports to the Northwestern Co-Directors of CSB. The incumbent is responsible for identifying mutual and complimentary interests and expertise at Northwestern, attracting world-class collaborations, and supporting the expansion of federal and corporate sponsored research portfolio in addition to development strategies that will enhance CSB’s donor portfolio.

MBP Postdoctoral Researcher – Job Description
The Master of Biotechnology Program (MBP) at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois is seeking a teaching postdoctoral scholar with expertise in biochemical engineering, bioprocess engineering, and molecular biology to join the team under the guidance of experienced faculty. This instructional teaching program is designed to be a launching pad that prepares exceptional PhD scholars for successful careers in academia. Participants will be mentored by experienced Northwestern instructional faculty as they carry out teaching activities in fundamental or specialized biochemical engineering and biotechnology courses appropriate to their background. Although the position is designed to primarily give instructional training and experience via teaching 1-2 courses and/or course sections per quarter and/or develop new instructional materials, up to 20% of the postdoc’s time can be used to engage in scholarly pursuits in partnership and collaboration with Northwestern faculty. This is a full academic year appointment (September to June) starting in September 2024 with the possibility of a one-year extension contingent upon department need and satisfactory evaluations.
Eligible candidates must have Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Biology, or a closely related field, and a passion for teaching. Preference will be given to candidates with a demonstrated interest in university-level teaching, in laboratory-based instruction, and experience in bioprocess engineering and/or biotechnology.
