The Leonard and Tullman-Ercek labs partnered with the Science Explorer program at Mather High School to host students for a hands-on synthetic biology experience. The Science Explorer program pairs small teams of students with a graduate student or postdoctoral fellow mentor, who meet twice a week to enrich science learning and provide support for underserved students in a highly diverse student population. For this event, students learned about molecular biology and genetic engineering, culminating with an hands-on opportunity to “paint” with fluorescent bacteria. Art credits to Leonard Lab members: Devin Stranford, Taylor Dolberg, and Patrick Donahue.
